Gaite, B. et al. (2022), "Analysis of Faster-Than-Real-Time (FTRT) Tsunami Simulations for the Spanish Tsunami Warning System for the Atlantic", GeoHazards. Vol. 3(3), pp. 371-394. |
Abstract: Real-time local tsunami warnings embody uncertainty from unknowns in the source definition within the first minutes after the tsunami generates. In general, Tsunami Warning Systems (TWS) provide a quick estimate for tsunami action from deterministic simulations of a single event. In this study, variability in tsunami source parameters has been included by running 135 tsunami simulations; besides this, four different computational domains in the northeastern Atlantic ocean have been considered, resulting in 540 simulations associated with a single event. This was done for tsunamis generated by earthquakes in the Gulf of Cadiz with impact in the western Iberian peninsula and the Canary Islands. A first answer is provided after one minute, and 7 min are required to perform all the simulations in the four computational domains. The fast computation allows alert levels all along the coast to be incorporated into the Spanish National Tsunami Early Warning System. The main findings are that the use of a set of scenarios that account for the uncertainty in source parameters can produce higher tsunami warnings in certain coastal areas than those obtained from a single deterministic reference scenario. Therefore, this work shows that considering uncertainties in tsunami source parameters helps to avoid possible tsunami warning level underestimations. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that this is possible to do in real time in an actual TWS with the use of high-performance computing resources. |

Abstract: The evolution of High-Performance Computing (HPC) platforms enables the design and execution of progressively larger and more complex workflow applications in these systems. The complexity comes not only from the number of elements that compose the workflows but also from the type of computations they perform. While traditional HPC workflows target simulations and modelling of physical phenomena, current needs require in addition data analytics (DA) and artificial intelligence (AI) tasks. However, the development of these workflows is hampered by the lack of proper programming models and environments that support the integration of HPC, DA, and AI, as well as the lack of tools to easily deploy and execute the workflows in HPC systems. To progress in this direction, this paper presents use cases where complex workflows are required and investigates the main issues to be addressed for the HPC/DA/AI convergence. Based on this study, the paper identifies the challenges of a new workflow platform to manage complex workflows. Finally, it proposes a development approach for such a workflow platform addressing these challenges in two directions: first, by defining a software stack that provides the functionalities to manage these complex workflows; and second, by proposing the HPC Workflow as a Service (HPCWaaS) paradigm, which leverages the software stack to facilitate the reusability of complex workflows in federated HPC infrastructures. Proposals presented in this work are subject to study and development as part of the EuroHPC eFlows4HPC project. |

Abstract: We investigate the dynamics and deposits of granular flows and the amplitude of landslide-generated water waves using the HySEA depth-averaged shallow-water numerical model, both at laboratory and field scales. We evaluate the different sources of error by quantitatively comparing the simulations with (i) new laboratory experiments of granular collapses in different conditions (dry, immersed, dry flow entering water) and slope angles and (ii) numerical simulations made with the SHALTOP code that describes topography effects better than most depth-averaged landslide-tsunami models. For laboratory configurations, representing the limits of the shallow-water approximation in such models, we show that topography and non-hydrostatic effects are crucial. When topography effects are accounted for empirically—by artificially increasing the friction coefficient and performing non-hydrostatic simulations—the model is able to reproduce the granular mass deposit and the waves recorded at gauges located at a distance of more than two to three times the characteristic dimension of the slide with an error ranging from 1 to 25 per cent depending on the scenario, without any further calibration. Taking into account this error estimate, we simulate landslides that occurred on Montagne Pelée volcano, Martinique, Lesser Antilles as well as the generated waves. Multiple collapse simulations support the assumption that large flank collapses on Montagne Pelée likely occurred in several successive subevents. This result has a strong impact on the amplitude of the generated waves and thus on the associated hazards. In the context of the ongoing seismic volcanic unrest at Montagne Pelée volcano, we calculate the debris avalanche and associated tsunamis for two potential flank-collapse scenarios. |

Abstract: The application of simulation software has proven to be a crucial tool for tsunami hazard assessment studies. Understanding the potentially devastating effects of tsunamis leads to the development of safety and resilience measures, such as the design of evacuation plans or the planning of the economic investment necessary to quickly mitigate their consequences. This article introduces a pseudo-probabilistic seismic-triggered tsunami simulation approach to investigate the potential impact of tsunamis in the southwestern coast of Spain, in the provinces of Huelva and Cádiz. Selected faults, probabilistic distributions and sampling methods are presented as well as some results for the nearly 900 Atlantic-origin tsunamis computed along the 250 km-long coast. |

Gibbons, S.J. et al. (2022), "The Sensitivity of Tsunami Impact to Earthquake Source Parameters and Manning Friction in High-Resolution Inundation Simulations", Frontiers in Earth Science. Vol. 9 |
Abstract: In seismically active regions with variable dominant focal mechanisms, there is considerable tsunami inundation height uncertainty. Basic earthquake source parameters such as dip, strike, and rake affect significantly the tsunamigenic potential and the tsunami directivity. Tsunami inundation is also sensitive to other properties such as bottom friction. Despite their importance, sensitivity to these basic parameters is surprisingly sparsely studied in literature. We perform suites of systematic parameter searches to investigate the sensitivity of inundation at the towns of Catania and Siracusa on Sicily to changes both in the earthquake source parameters and the Manning friction. The inundation is modelled using the Tsunami-HySEA shallow water code on a system of nested topo-bathymetric grids with a finest spatial resolution of 10 m. This GPU-based model, with significant HPC resources, allows us to perform large numbers of high-resolution tsunami simulations. We analyze the variability of different hydrodynamic parameters due to large earthquakes with uniform slip at different locations, focal depth, and different source parameters. We consider sources both near the coastline, in which significant near-shore co-seismic deformation occurs, and offshore, where near-shore co-seismic deformation is negligible. For distant offshore earthquake sources, we see systematic and intuitive changes in the inundation with changes in strike, dip, rake, and depth. For near-shore sources, the dependency is far more complicated and co-determined by both the source mechanisms and the coastal morphology. The sensitivity studies provide directions on how to resolve the source discretization to optimize the number of sources in Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Analysis, and they demonstrate a need for a far finer discretization of local sources than for more distant sources. For a small number of earthquake sources, we study systematically the inundation as a function of the Manning coefficient. The sensitivity of the inundation to this parameter varies greatly for different earthquake sources and topo-bathymetry at the coastline of interest. The friction greatly affects the velocities and momentum flux and to a lesser but still significant extent the inundation distance from the coastline. An understanding of all these dependencies is needed to better quantify the hazard when source complexity increases. |

Abstract: Tsunamis constitute a significant hazard for European coastal populations, and the impact of tsunami events worldwide can extend well beyond the coastal regions directly affected. Understanding the complex mechanisms of tsunami generation, propagation, and inundation, as well as managing the tsunami risk, requires multidisciplinary research and infrastructures that cross national boundaries. Recent decades have seen both great advances in tsunami science and consolidation of the European tsunami research community. A recurring theme has been the need for a sustainable platform for coordinated tsunami community activities and a hub for tsunami services. Following about three years of preparation, in July 2021, the European tsunami community attained the status of Candidate Thematic Core Service (cTCS) within the European Plate Observing System (EPOS) Research Infrastructure. Within a transition period of three years, the Tsunami candidate TCS is anticipated to develop into a fully operational EPOS TCS. We here outline the path taken to reach this point, and the envisaged form of the future EPOS TCS Tsunami. Our cTCS is planned to be organised within four thematic pillars: (1) Support to Tsunami Service Providers, (2) Tsunami Data, (3) Numerical Models, and (4) Hazard and Risk Products. We outline how identified needs in tsunami science and tsunami risk mitigation will be addressed within this structure and how participation within EPOS will become an integration point for community development. |

Abstract: Operational TEWS play a key role in reducing tsunami impact on populated coastal areas around the world in the event of an earthquake-generated tsunami. Traditionally, these systems in the NEAM region have relied on the implementation of decision matrices. The very short arrival times of the tsunami waves from generation to impact in this region have made it not possible to use real-time on-the-fly simulations to produce more accurate alert levels. In these cases, when time restriction is so demanding, an alternative to the use of decision matrices is the use of datasets of precomputed tsunami scenarios. In this paper we propose the use of neural networks to predict the tsunami maximum height and arrival time in the context of TEWS. Different neural networks were trained to solve these problems. Additionally, ensemble techniques were used to obtain better results. |

Kirby, J.T. et al. (2022), "Validation and inter-comparison of models for landslide tsunami generation", Ocean Modelling. Vol. 170, pp. 101943. |
Abstract: The Mapping and Modeling Subcommittee of the US National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program convened a workshop in January 2017 to evaluate the present state of numerical models for the simulation of tsunamis generated by submarine or subaerial landslides. A range of benchmark tests were provided to participants, with three tests emphasized: (i) a laboratory submarine solid slide in a 2D horizontal tank, (ii) a laboratory submarine granular slide in a 1D flume, and (iii) a field case based on submarine slides which occurred in Port Valdez, AK during the 1964 Alaska earthquake. Nine landslide tsunami models configured with 21 different combinations of physical options were benchmarked, including: (1) hydrostatic models with no frequency dispersion, which include the nonlinear shallow equation models traditionally used for modeling coseismic tsunamis; (2) Boussinesq or one-layer weakly dispersive models; (3) Multi-layer or non-hydrostatic (i.e., dispersive) models; and (4) Full Navier–Stokes models. Model/data comparison indicates that the inclusion of frequency dispersion in model formulations is critical to obtaining physically reasonable results for the test cases considered. Because the importance of dispersive effects is unknown a priori for any given simulated event, the central recommendation from this work is that a model with at minimum a leading-order representation of frequency dispersion effects be used whenever possible for landslide tsunami simulations. |

Abstract: In this paper we consider the Lagrange-Projection technique in the framework of finite volume schemes applied to the shallow water system. We shall consider two versions of the scheme for the Lagrangian step: one fully implicit and one implicit-explicit, based on how the geometric source term is treated. First and second order well-balanced versions of the schemes are presented, in which the water at rest solutions are preserved. This allows to obtain efficient numerical schemes in low Froude number regimes, as the usual CFL restriction driven by the acoustic waves is avoided. |

Abstract: The aim of this work is to design implicit and semi-implicit high-order well-balanced finite-volume numerical methods for 1D systems of balance laws. The strategy introduced by two of the authors in some previous papers for explicit schemes based on the application of a well-balanced reconstruction operator is applied. The well-balanced property is preserved when quadrature formulas are used to approximate the averages and the integral of the source term in the cells. Concerning the time evolution, this technique is combined with a time discretization method of type RK-IMEX or RK-implicit. The methodology will be applied to several systems of balance laws. |

Abstract: The aim of this work is to construct efficient finite volume schemes for the numerical study of sediment transport in shallow water, in the framework of the Exner model [7], [10]. In most cases, the velocity related to the sediment is much lower that the fluid velocity, which, in turn, may be much lower that the free-surface wave speed. Explicit methods that resolve all waves require small time steps due to the CFL stability restriction because of fast surface waves. Furthermore, if Rusanov flux is adopted, slow sediment waves may be affected by the large numerical diffusion. The objective of the present work is to drastically improve the efficiency in the computation of the evolution of the sediment by treating water waves implicitly, thus allowing much larger time steps than the one required by fully explicit schemes. The goal is reached by suitably semi-implicit schemes obtained by the use of implicit-explicit Runge-Kutta methods. |

Abstract: Abstract. This article focuses on the design of semi-implicit schemes that are fully well-balanced for the one-dimensional shallow water equations, that is, schemes that preserve all smooth steady states of the system and not just water-at-rest equilibria. The proposed methods outperform standard explicit schemes in the low-Froude regime, where the celerity is much larger than the fluid velocity, eliminating the need for a large number of iterations on large time intervals. In this work, splitting and relaxation techniques are combined in order to obtain fully well-balanced semi-implicit first and second order schemes. In contrast to recent Lagrangian-based approaches, this one allows the preservation of all the steady states while avoiding the complexities associated with Lagrangian formalism. |

Abstract: In this article, we present a multi-dimensional-aware Eulerian Riemann Solver (RS) and its associated Finite Volume (FV) scheme for the 2D Shallow-Water (SW) equations. This RS, appropriately derived from its associated Lagrangian version, presents the specific feature of coupling all cells in the vicinity of the current one. Consequently, this solver is no longer a 1D RS across one edge. Contrarily, it encounters for genuine multidimensional effects and for the presence of the source term of the SW equations. The associated first order FV numerical scheme ensures well-balancing for lake at rest steady states, positivity preservation and entropy stability properties. Moreover, a second-order accurate extension is proposed based on Runge-Kutta time discretization and piecewise linear limited reconstructions, that preserve the well-balanced character of the first order scheme. We present several 2D tests assessing the good behaviors of the obtained numerical scheme on unstructured mesh. The numerical scheme seems insensitive to spurious numerical instabilities such as the carbuncle effect. |

Abstract: Sill-controlled flows involving the acceleration across a crest or control section with significant flow curvature are characterized by the Euler equations of an inviscid fluid. The problem is of both theoretical and practical interest in fluid mechanics research, given the role of such flows in water discharge measurements structures, underwater oceanic currents, river flows and shallow bar-built estuary inlets, among others. While three-dimensional computations are feasible, vertically averaged solutions are sought to gain efficiency. The vertically averaged representation of sill overflows based on the Serre–Green–Naghdi (SGN) theory is limited to very shallow flows, and a good averaged approach for large overflows is currently not available. High-level Green–Naghdi (GN) theory forms a hierarchy of theories of increasing accuracy based on expanding the kinematic field and vertically-averaging in a weighted-residual sense. These theories have been successfully applied to ocean research but so far, they have not been applied to flow in open channels and structures. In this work, the high-level Green–Naghdi theories, of which SGN equations are the lowest level possible (GN level I theory), are formulated and newly applied to the sill-controlled flow problem. High-level GN theory is compared with detailed experiments from the literature and new ones conducted, and with a new fully non-linear vertically resolved potential flow solver which uses a x–ψ mapping. It was found that the GN expansions are convergent in the sill problem, in contrast to former perturbation solutions, which are asymptotic. The GN level V theory was found to be in good agreement with experiments for the sill-controlled flow problem, which excellently reproduced the free surface, bottom pressure, and vertical distributions of velocity and pressure. The GN level V theory was found to be applicable for relatively wide range of overflows up to E/R=3, where E is the minimum specific energy and R the sill crest radius of curvature. From a practical viewpoint, large improvements were observed when using GN level II theory, instead of GN level I (e.g. the SGN theory), producing good results up to E/R=1.75, which is the minimum level thus recommended in practice. |

Abstract: Efficient modeling of flow physics is a prerequisite for a reliable computation of free-surface environmental flows. Non-hydrostatic flows are often present in shallow water environments, making the task challenging. In this work, we use the method of weighted residuals for modeling non-hydrostatic free surface flows in a depth-averaged framework. In particular, we focus on the Vertically Averaged and Moment (VAM) equations model. First, a new derivation of the model is presented using expansions of the field variables in sigma-coordinates with Legendre polynomials basis. Second, an efficient two-step numerical scheme is proposed: the first step corresponds to solving the hyperbolic part with a second-order path-conservative PVM scheme. Then, in a second step, non-hydrostatic terms are corrected by solving a linear Poisson-like system using an iterative method, thereby resulting in an accurate and efficient algorithm. The computational effort is similar to the one required for the well-known Serre-Green-Naghdi (SGN) system, while the results are largely improved. Finally, the physical aspects of the model are compared to the SGN system and a multilayer model, demonstrating that VAM is comparable in physical accuracy to a two-layer model. |
